6. University Of Montreal

Université de Montréal was founded as an affiliated school of Université Laval in 1878. After the university received its own charter in 1919, it became independent and opened its gates to students post-1920. The university moved to its present campus at Mount Royal in 1942 after relocating from the Quartier Latin of Montreal.

It finally became known as a secular institution with the passing of another provincial charter in 1967, which allowed it to give the official go-ahead for coeducation (prior to this change, women were still able to pursue degrees but could not be employed on site).
